Lives Matter

Lives Matter. It isn’t just a trend or a publicity stunt. It is something which beholds the rights for all people, for all groups, for all of humanity. White supremacy occurs in all areas whether it is for job opportunities, selection in a particular organization and even in schools. A black man named Willie Simmons stole $9 and was imprisoned for 38 YEARS. Whereas, a white man named Brock Turner committed a sexual assault crime and was imprisoned for 6 MONTHS. Very high numbers of other racial youths, especially males, report being stopped regularly or searched by police – approximately double the rate for white youth. There are many more examples that prove that White supremacy is supported in all areas of life against all racial groups. In Canada, a 62 year old, Muslim man, Ejaz Chaudhry was shot by a police officer as they claimed he was holding a weapon but witnesses say that this is not true. A black, 29 year old woman jumped off her balcony while police officers were present. She died before being given any medical support. Investigators say that she may have suffered from mental illness and a disturbing call from the police triggered her anxiety and caused her to commit suicide. With consistent racism and mental health phobias people are dying. Mental health is taken as a stigma. While only physical effects are only considered as REAL ISSUES. Cancer is a major problem and billion dollars are given for research to find a cure for Cancer. Another major problem is mental health, however, the amount of funds given for research and for support systems is fairly less. Why is such a major issue ignored? Why are only physical effects taken more seriously than mental effects? Why is white supremacy supported so much? This is the type of society we all live in. We need supporters not attackers. Lives matter and all issues should be given the same importance!

Things need to be changed! We need to bring a change! We need to share our voices to bring a change! IS THIS THE MODERN 21ST CENTURY?

HUMAN TRAFFICKING

Imagine the fear, panic and worry that women from around the world experience everyday, every minute and every second of their lives as they fear for their safety and their well-being. Why panic, you ask? Well, in a world where 112 women are trafficked every second, the world (for a woman), seems nothing less than a war zone (United Nations)!

Amongst the numerous communities highly targeted for human trafficking, the Akwesasne community is one of Canada’s highly trafficked regions. Akwesasne is a prime spot for traffickers because it is home to numerous First Nations communities that are isolated and neglected from the Canadian government’s safety and security. Moreover, it borders between Quebec and the United States with no border crossings, allowing traffickers to easily traffic individuals from one territory to another. In addition, the Akwesasne territory is surrounded by the St.Lawrence River where thousands of traffickers transport people and weapons by swimming in the summer, or by walking on frozen ice during the winter.

Despite being the most susceptible territory in Canada for human trafficking, the Canadian government continues to neglect the safety and security of these territories’  residents. Consequently, even though the Indigenous community represents less than five per cent of the total population,  50 percent of the victims of human trafficking in Canada are Indigenous women!

Everyday we start our day with the land acknowledgment, but still continue to forget that the land that we stand on is truly the lands of the Indigenous and First Nations Communities,  ruthlessly using their resources, while doing nothing in-return for their safety and well-being. The accomplishments we have made and the beautiful lifestyles we have constructed for ourselves are, in reality, hills burying countless tortures, inequalities and neglect towards Indigenous peoples underneath them.

If we don’t act towards making a change now, we (ourselves) are paving a future with fearless traffickers and unsafe homes for all women! Spread the word, educate everyone about human trafficking and the impact it has on victims, participate in workshops and build a future that is worth living and that is worth being called YOURS!

This is the time to work together to bring a change. Nothing is impossible, we can make it possible! #Let’sBringAChange

A Flood of Suicides

Six of the 88 victims of abetted suicide (source: CTV news)

It is with a heavy heart and great sadness that I report that within a few months, 88 innocent lives have been lost.

What’s even more shocking is that all these individuals committed suicide by ingesting a lethal drug that was exported by various different illegal websites operating in Canada. Police allege Kenneth Law to be linked to operating all of these websites selling lethal drugs and suicide paraphernalia to clients already at-risk of suicide.

While only 88 suicides have been found in connection to this case, the RCMP is certain that many more suicides are yet to be uncovered in relation to this case.

Having already lost so many lives, it is essential that we use this time to take action. We must inform our youth about the potential they have to offer and the importance they have in our societies. Even a simple acknowledgment or appreciation can be life saving.  We must bring a change in ourselves to bring a change in society. Time is moving and so shall our mindsets , our standards, and our ways towards the future!

“Collision! ”

A woman has died after she was struck by a vehicle in Newmarket Thursday night in York Region. Police were called around 7:30 p.m. to the intersection of Stonehaven Avenue and Best Circle for a single-vehicle collision involving a pedestrian. Emergency services arrived and found a woman on the roadway who was injured and without vital signs. The driver remained on the scene and there’s currently no indication that drugs or alcohol were involved. The woman was transported to a hospital where she died about an hour later, he said. The Major Collisions Investigation Unit is attending the scene. Police are warning drivers that roads in the area may be closed for the investigation. It is strange to see that everyday brings news regarding such devastating and violent attacks occurring , especially during such critical time. Though, we must not lose hope. Safety belongs in our hands and so we should all work together to bring a positive change in the society. This is the time to work together to bring a change. Nothing is impossible, we can make it possible! #Let’sBringAChange

“A New Disease Outbreak! ”

Looking at the current conditions, I wouldn’t be wrong if I said that the apocalypse is near. From pandemics to chicken pox to social distancing, what else may be left to make the situation worse? Of course, another disease. A new disease is suspected to have killed over 60 deer on at least two B.C. Gulf Islands, according to the province. The cause of death is suspected to be adenovirus hemorrhagic disease (AHD), a virus that was initially discovered in California, but has so far never been recorded in B.C. A Friday news release says the dead deer were discovered on Galiano Island in September, sparking an investigation by wildlife professionals and provincial staff. The province’s news release did not say where else the dead deer have been found. Samples from the animals were sent to Canadian and United States laboratories to confirm the cause of the disease. There are ongoing AHD outbreaks in California and Oregon. According to the release, there are no known human health risks from the virus, however, hunters are advised not to consume meat from animals found dead, obviously ill or acting abnormally prior to death. It also says the virus cannot be transmitted to livestock and pets. The disease can affect all including mule deer, white-tailed deer, elk, moose and caribou, although black-tailed deer appear to be most severely affected and fawns are far more likely to die if infected. There is no known cure or treatment for the disease. Visible symptoms of AHD include difficulty breathing, diarrhea, and seizures. This time is difficult to deal with but not impossible. This is the time to work together to bring a change. Nothing is impossible, we can make it possible! #Let’sBringAChange

“Is this the second wave?”

Ontario reported an additional 409 cases of COVID-19 on Thursday, as Premier Doug Ford said his government will invest $1 billion to expand testing and contact-tracing capacity heading into flu season, including some $30 million to “prevent and manage outbreaks” in priority settings such as long-term care facilities, retirement homes and schools. The province’s network of labs is currently facing a backlog of 53,840 test samples, the most since cases of the infection were first detected in January. During a media briefing, health officials said that publicly funded testing sites are moving away from offering tests to asymptomatic people. Instead, the province will return to a more targeted approach as hospitals, testing sites and labs have reported being overwhelmed by public demand for tests.”We know that over the summer, when we opened up testing to anybody who wanted it, we did not find cases,” said Dr. Barbara Yaffe, Ontario’s associate chief medical officer of health. “Right now, we need to focus on people who are symptomatic, people who are contacts, people in outbreaks, or in very specific populations where we have designated that testing needs to occur. Your average person out there who is not exposed to a case … should not be going for testing. There’s no value. In fact, what we found is when there’s very little COVID in that group, what we end up with is false positives, which just complicates things even more.” Testing of asymptomatic people will be limited to pharmacies, an initiative announced by Ford earlier this week. According to Matthew Anderson, president and CEO of Ontario Health, the province hopes to have capacity for up to 50,000 tests per day some time in October. With the continuous efforts from the government to make a change it is also our duty to ensure that we keep guard of our own safety by ourselves. Effective cleaning should be an important part of the schedule in all households, especially during this time. Using antibacterial wipes, sprays is essential in order to eliminate contaminants that can cause bacteria to spread. Lack of hygiene and cleanliness is an open invitation to infectious bacteria. This is the time to work together to bring a change. Nothing is impossible, we can make it possible! #Let’sBringAChange

“Increasing Cases Of Covid-19 In schools”

Alberta has identified its first likely case of COVID-19 transmission within a school. The second case at Edmonton’s Waverley School was likely transmitted from another individual at the school who has tested positive, Dr. Deena Hinshaw, Alberta’s chief medical officer of health, said at a news conference. Hinshaw said both individuals were infectious within the school and that one of them “seems to have been the source for the other.” “Although it is difficult to say with 100 percent certainty where transmission happens, given the facts in this situation, it seems to be a likely situation,” she said. Transmission within a school “was not unexpected and is not a cause for alarm,” Hinshaw said. “However, I know many are anxious about school safety and I felt it was important to share this information with you and to talk about what it means.” Waverley School is a public elementary school in the Kenilworth neighbourhood in southeast Edmonton. Last year it had about 170 students. Edmonton Public Schools said about 12 students from a combined Grade 1/2 class and seven staff members need to isolate at home for 14 days, monitor for symptoms and be tested. On Thursday, there were 1,483 active cases in Alberta. No additional deaths were reported. Across Alberta, 41 people were being treated in hospitals for the illness, including eight in ICU beds. Since the beginning of the pandemic in early March, Alberta has reported 16,274 cases of COVID-19. Of that total, 1,483 cases were listed as active on Thursday, and 14,537 were listed as recovered. As of Thursday, 254 people had died from the illness. This time is very critical, and we all need to stand together to fight against it. This time is not to fight, rather it is to be with one another, take consideration of all the essential protocols to fight against all the challenges that come near us. Keeping this in mind, we must comprehend that our health and safety lies in our hands. Ensuring that we wear a mask and gloves when going outside or when we are near a group of people is essential. Keeping at least a 2 meter distance is also very essential when we are near a group of people. We must not give hope, there will be a change in our circumstances, and we are the ones who can make a change. This is the time to work together to bring a change. Nothing is impossible, we can make it possible! #Let’sBringAChange

“Overwhelming Attack”

Police are investigating after an incident in the city’s Weston neighbourhood Saturday afternoon left three people dead. In the area of Church Street and King George Road, east of Weston Road, a report of stabbing was reported. People reported that when officers arrived a man and woman were located dead at a residence. Another man was found dead in nearby train tracks after he was struck by a UP express train. “As it stands now, this is a contained incident. We don’t believe there’s any threat to the community,” said the police officers. “We’re looking for video. We’re looking for anybody that has information that might have seen the events transpire.” Police said they are not looking for any suspects. Anyone with information is being asked to call police or Crime Stoppers anonymously. Service on the UP Express has been suspended due to the incident. GO buses are running between Union Station and Pearson airport. It is strange to see that everyday brings news regarding such devastating and violent attacks occurring , especially during such critical time. Though, we must not lose hope. Safety belongs in our hands and so we should all work together to bring a positive change in the society. This is the time to work together to bring a change. “Salmonella Outbreak”

A bacterial disease that affects the intestinal tract by inhabiting animals and human intestines, known as Salmonella has now outbroke Canada and largely in the U.S. The Public Health Agency of Canada says authorities have confirmed a total of 48 illnesses in Quebec and Ontario as of Wednesday. The agency says peaches, red and yellow onions, and raw meat imported from the U.S. are under investigation. California-based grower Prima Wawona has recalled several varieties of products sold in Canada between June 1 and Aug. 22 over contamination concerns. They were sold under various brand names, including Extrafresh, Harvest Sweet, Prima, Sweet 2 Eat, Sweet O, Sweet Value, Wawona and Wegmans. I strongly encourage people to take safety precautions when handling raw chicken and to avoid products from the U.S. during this time. The bacteria can be spread by contact between cooked foods, fruits and raw poultry on unwashed cutting boards or knives. It can also be passed in the feces of infected people and animals. It can be found in contaminated soil, food, water or on surfaces. The bacteria are spread by person to person contact, by animal to person contact, by eating contaminated food or by drinking contaminated water,”said Specialists. Symptoms of salmonellosis typically show up within one or two days after a person becomes infected. Most people who become ill experience diarrhea, stomach cramps, headache, nausea, vomiting and fever. Symptoms usually last less than a week. In some cases, serious illness can develop. The Department of Health is monitoring the situation and is in contact with the Public Health Agency of Canada.Washing your hands and surfaces thoroughly to avoid the spread of bacteria is essential. All harmful bacteria can be spread just by touching an infected surface, such as a cutting board, and then touching another surface. This means residents should wash and sanitize all plates, utensils and cutting boards that touched or held raw meat or poultry before using them again for cooked foods. Effective cleaning should be an important part of the schedule in all households, especially during this time. Using antibacterial wipes, sprays is essential in order to eliminate contaminants that can cause bacteria to spread. Lack of hygiene and cleanliness is an open invitation to infectious bacteria. “Apocalypse or Bad Luck?”

Looking at the current conditions, I wouldn’t be wrong if I said that the apocalypse is near. From pandemics to chicken pox to social distancing, what else may be left to make the situation worse? Of course, another outbreak. Two cases of a disease fatal to elm trees were recently discovered in Lethbridge. Dutch elm disease is a fungus and will kill an elm tree if infected. The disease has killed millions of trees in North America since it was discovered on the continent nearly 100 years ago. And until now, Alberta had successfully kept out the disease, with only one previous case. That was in Wainwright in the late 1990s. But in late August, two elm trees growing side by side in Lethbridge tested positive for the fungus.Someone spotted the trees, which seemed to have the typical symptoms like wilting leaves and flagging, which is when the leaves on a whole branch turn yellow.”Because of the seriousness of the disease … those trees that were confirmed were removed and immediately buried,” said Feddes-Calpas, disease specialist. As to how the trees got infected, Feddes-Calpas says the affliction can spread from tree to tree by elm bark beetles or by root grass. They can easily fly out to a healthy tree and infect the tree. The City of Lethbridge says it has been monitoring tree pests and insects for years, including elm bark beetles, which are common in many Alberta municipalities, according to Lethbridge parks manager Dave Ellis. But so far, none of the beetles found in the southern Alberta city were carriers of the fungus. “It is serious. Once a tree is infected, it will die. They have no defence [against] the fungus,” Feddes-Calpas said. We’ve been fortunate because this situation can be controlled before it worsens as Saskatchewan has amazing prevention programs and control programs in place, so they’re able to [contain] the disease.” She says Alberta has been able to learn from other provinces’ battles with the fungus. In terms of prevention, she says it’s important the public first know what an elm looks like. The second is to watch for sudden yellowing of a branch with initial symptoms like wilted leaves, followed by curling, turning yellow and then brown. “The dead, curled leaves tend to persist on the tree,” she said. If you think an elm tree has it, she says, take a branch out of the infected area and look for brown staining, which indicates the fungus is present and if so, then you should call the provincial hotline or the municipality. One day after another, there’s bad news to hear. What could this mean? What should we do? Well these are the questions that millions of us, around the world, have been asking. In my opinion, it’s only our actions that can stop everything. It’s we who have forgotten to protect the environment and to sustainably use resources that we have been provided. Therefore, this is the time for support, to work together as a team and to bring a change. We will have to bring a change, by bringing a change in ourselves to bring a change in society.  Nothing is impossible, we can make it possible! #Let’sBringAChange

“Does Intolerance Still Continue?”

Police shot a Black man in the back multiple times in Kenosha, Wis., as his three sons watched on Sunday. The shooting prompted recognition of racism within the United States and broadly around the country. Jacob Blake, 29 year old, was taken to a hospital in serious condition after the shooting late Sunday afternoon. Blake’s father told that his son was out of surgery and in stable condition. News of the shooting sparked a night of unrest during which protesters hurled firebombs and bricks at law enforcement officers in Kenosha, leading Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers to call in the National Guard on Monday. The video that has been circulating on social media is very disturbing and shows Blake walking toward the driver’s side of a grey SUV followed by two officers with their guns drawn and pointed at his back. Seven gunshots can be heard as Blake, who appears to be unarmed, opens the car door. It was unknown whether the officers saw something inside the vehicle to justify deadly force. It was also not clear whether one or both officers fired their weapons.Crowds gathered at the scene, set fires and threw bricks and Molotov cocktails at police, prompting authorities to impose a curfew. On Monday morning Kenosha County announced on Twitter that its courthouse and administration building would be closed due to damage from the night’s unrest.Evers issued comments just as protesters took to the streets in Kenosha and clashed with police, demanding action from elected officials in Wisconsin “who have failed to recognize the racism.” While not all details have been provided yet, what has been told for certain is that he is not the first Black man or person to have been shot or injured or mercilessly killed at the hands of individuals in law enforcement, ” Evers said. Saying he stands with everyone who has demanded justice, equity and accountability for excessive use of force when engaged with Black people, the Democratic governor was met with condemnation from other, mainly Republican officials. This incident makes it evident that intolerance and racist attitudes run in our society and in our system. Why is it that people of colour, different cultures and backgrounds are treated with such severe intolerance whereas a man who is openly present with firearms is only arrested? This needs to be changed, we all need to have the same rights, the same restrictions and the same laws. This can only happen if we try to bring a change by using different platforms that we have on our fingertips to spread awareness and to show that intolerance and racism will not be accepted. Awareness can also be spread by words, it always doesn’t have to be destructive, so let’s stand together as a team, use our resources and our platforms to share our voices against racism, intolerance, mental health tabeau’s e.tc. We won’t let innocent lives be taken away, we will have to bring a change, by bringing a change in ourselves to bring a change in the society.  Nothing is impossible, we can make it possible! #Let’sBringAChange
